Vice President Kamala Harris is making a stop in Maryland to try and boost Democrats’s chances of holding on to a key Senate seat in November.

Harris is joining Democratic Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks on the campaign trail in her bid to beat out former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who gives Republicans the best chance to obtain a Senate seat there in decades.

Harris is expected to speak alongside Alsobrooks at a campaign event on “Gun Violence Awareness Day,” where Harris will also highlight the Biden administration’s work on gun safety legislation. They will deliver remarks on gun violence while drawing a contrast with Republicans.

“On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, I’m joining [Alsobrooks] to discuss what’s at stake this November to keep our communities safe,” a post from Harris on X said.

Most crucially, they’re trying to put space between Alsobrooks and Hogan on the issue. Hogan has distanced himself from former President Donald Trump and has sought out Democratic support in a state where the party outnumbers the GOP about 2-to-1 in registered voters.

Hogan has also sought to establish himself as a rare abortion-rights Republican candidate. He’s said he would vote for legislation that makes Roe v. Wade the “law of the land, in every state, so every woman can make her own choice.” He’s fended off attacks from Alsobrooks who said “he has already shown himself to be a person who does not support choice.”

Alsobrooks hasn’t hit the campaign trail much after her Democratic primary battle with Rep. David Trone (D-MD), who poured millions of his own funds into the race. Hogan has already been spotted in several parts of the state posing with union workers and showing up at Annapolis’s Gay Pride parade after his easier primary.

Harris and Alsobrooks are very familiar with each other. The latter supported Harris’s 2016 Senate campaign and considers Harris her “quintessential big sister.”

If she is elected, Alsobrooks will be the first black senator from Maryland.
