Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in touch with King Charles III’s office about the monarch’s upcoming coronation, their spokesperson confirmed Sunday, marking the strongest suggestion to date that they have been invited to attend.

A representative for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement to The Sunday Times that Harry had “recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the coronation.” The couple, who stepped down from senior royal duties in early 2020 due to friction with the family, declined to say if they planned to attend.

Speculation has swirled for months about whether the Harry and Meghan would be invited to the May event after their public rehashing of private disputes. The couple has made a series of damning revelations against senior members of the royal family in numerous high-profile interviews, a Netflix documentary released late last year, and Harry’s memoir, Spare, which he promoted earlier this year with a major media tour.

The headline-grabbing revelations have largely overshadowed preparations for Charles and Camilla’s coronation, which is scheduled to take place on May 6.

Harry argued that the ball was “in their court,” referring to his father and brother, Prince William, when asked while promoting Spare in a January interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby if he would consider attending the coronation.

“There’s a lot that can happen between now and then,” Harry said at the time. “But, the door is always open. The ball is in their court. There’s a lot to be discussed, and I really hope that they’re willing to sit down and talk about it.”

The royals have yet to comment on Harry and Meghan’s most recent litany of allegations, last responding to accusations of unconscious racial bias by the couple after their bombshell interview with Oprah in March 2021.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning,” a statement from Buckingham Palace read. “While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

The palace has yet to respond to requests for comment on Harry and Meghan’s coronation attendance plans.

Charles appeared to extend an olive branch to his estranged son and daughter-in-law during his public first address as monarch last September, saying in the pre-recorded video message, “I want also to express my love to Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
