Hells Angels founder Sonny Barger died Wednesday at 83 after battling cancer, according to a statement posted to his Facebook page early Thursday.
“If you are reading this message, you’ll know that I’m gone. I’ve asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing,” the statement read.
“Please know that I passed peacefully after a brief battle with cancer.”

Barger, born Ralph Hubert Barger, died in California with his family at his side.
The biker and author is known for his role in the organization and the rise of the Oakland Hells Angels.
The Hells Angels celebrated 65 years in April.
“I’ve lived a long and good life filled with adventure. And I’ve had the privilege to be part of an amazing club,” Barger said in his statement.
“Although I’ve had a public persona for decades, [I’ve] mostly enjoyed special time with my club brothers, my family, and close friends.”
Barger lived a life full of action.
He was inspired after seeing Marlon Brando in 1953’s The Wild One and was acquitted of murder in 1972.
However, he did spend 4 1/2 years in prison for possession of narcotics and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
After he was released in 1977, he continued to lead his motorcycle gang, beating RICO charges in 1980.
Barger dealt with further battles with the law and returned to prison.
He was released from federal prison in 1992 after serving 3 1/2 years for conspiracy.
Barger wrote six books, including his autobiography, Hell’s Angel.
He ended his statement with a simple message for his fans and followers.
