Actor Matthew McConaughey returned to his hometown following the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers.
During his visit Friday, McConaughey joined Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) to meet with those grieving, including parents of the children who died at Robb Elementary School.

“This week was a solemn reminder that evil exists in the world, but we will never let it break us. We’ll unite to be an even more powerful reminder that love never fails & together we can change things,” Gonzales tweeted. “Appreciate Uvalde native Matthew McConaughey helping us heal.”

McConaughey was born in Uvalde. His mother reportedly taught at a school a mile away from Robb Elementary.
Hours after news of the shooting broke, McConaughey addressed the shooting on Twitter, saying it was time for the country to try and resolve the tension surrounding gun violence and gun rights. The movie star avoided any sort of overt political message.

“We cannot exhale once again, make excuses, and accept these tragic realities as the status quo,” McConaughey wrote. “This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better. We must do better.”
