The House Judiciary Committee‘s rules meeting devolved into a spat over an amendment to have the Pledge of Allegiance recited before committee meetings.

The amendment, proposed by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), was first objected to by Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who argued it was redundant to recite the Pledge of Allegiance because the pledge is already recited on the House floor daily.

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) then accused Nadler of skipping the daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and argued the rules amendment should be passed. Johnson said it was “absurd” to suggest reciting the pledge was not important.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) then stated it was “very ironic” that members of Congress who he claims supported the Jan. 6 Capitol riot were pushing for the Pledge of Allegiance. He added he was not opposed to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Nadler then fired back at Mike Johnson’s accusation that he skips the Pledge of Allegiance on the House floor, saying he has participated in the pledge on the House floor “dozens of times” and plans to continue to do so.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) and Gaetz got into an argument over Cicilline’s amendment to the amendment, which would prevent anyone who has “supported an insurrection against the United States in any way” from leading the pledge. Gaetz then argued Cicilline’s amendment would disqualify several Democratic committee members and asserted his amendment was vague in terminology.

The GOP House Judiciary Twitter page then tweeted the video and blasted Nadler for opposing the amendment, saying it was “unbelievable.”

A deleted tweet from the House Republicans’ Twitter account quote-tweeted the GOP House Judiciary with the Pledge of Allegiance, incorrectly quoting the oath.

“I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all,” the deleted tweet says.

The pledge is: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Gaetz’s amendment passed, but Cicilline’s amendment did not.
