A senior House Republican said it is time to impeach one of Joe Biden‘s top Cabinet officials for the ongoing disaster at the border.

More than 242,000 non-U.S. citizens attempted to enter the country illegally by walking around ports of entry or did not have the proper documents to be admitted at ports of entry in October, down from nearly 270,000 in September, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data released on Tuesday.

BUTTIGIEG AND MAYORKAS CALLED ON BY GALLEGO TO ‘SHUT DOWN’ AGENCIES SENDING MIGRANTS TO BORDER

“We are facing a serious challenge along the southwest border and CBP and our federal partners need more resources from Congress — as outlined in the supplemental budget request — to enhance border security and America’s national security.” said CBP Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy Miller in a statement. “Despite ongoing challenges, in November, the men and women of CBP continued their tireless work and recorded increased seizures of illegal narcotics while facilitating lawful trade and increased holiday travel.”

At the southern border, 191,113 immigrants were arrested by the Border Patrol, and 51,305 immigrants sought admission at ports but lacked documents, for a total of 242,418 southern border encounters.

Approximately 96,476 of the 191,113 arrested by Border Patrol were single adults, 82,689 arrived with a family member, and 11,948 were unaccompanied children.

House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) said the Biden administration purposely buried the numbers by releasing them the Friday afternoon before Christmas.

“By strategically holding the release of these numbers until the Friday before Christmas, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is unabashedly showing the full measure of his duplicity,” Green said in a statement. “These numbers are so bad, he wants as few Americans to see them as possible. And December’s numbers, which will be released in January, are anticipated to be even more grim.”

Green added that his committee was done investigating Mayorkas as it has done so for the past seven months.

“This cowardly quest to evade accountability and transparency is further reason my Committee is initiating impeachment proceedings against Secretary Mayorkas early in the new year,” Green said. “This devastating and utter disaster for our country will no longer be tolerated.”

Since March 2021, the number of immigrants who have arrived at the U.S. border has held at the highest levels in Border Patrol’s 99-year existence. Numbers have fluctuated between 160,000 and 270,000 encounters per month. In the decade preceding the Biden administration, monthly encounters remained between 20,000 and 50,000 immigrants.

The Biden administration has touted dips, including this month’s, as evidence its border policies are deterring immigrants from crossing illegally. However, each was short-lived.

Migration throughout the Western Hemisphere surged as a result of economic instability brought on, in part, by the coronavirus pandemic. Republicans have blamed President Joe Biden’s walking back Trump administration policies as sending a message beyond the borders that communicated it would not deport illegal immigrants.

Republicans have hammered Biden with claims his immigration promises enticed people from around the world to travel to the U.S. Upon taking office, Biden’s administration stopped turning away unaccompanied child immigrants, attempted to halt deportations for 100 days, and suspended border wall construction.
