The Washington Examiner’s Hugo Gurdon broke down the wins for the Republican Party in the tentative debt ceiling deal.

Gurdon appeared on Fox Report with Jon Scott to explain the details of the deal made Saturday that have yet to be finalized. As Gurdon sees it, the deal represents “a first” because “the Republicans have been winning this one all the way along.” In the past, Democratic lawmakers had painted the Republican Party as “the party of no.”

BIDEN AND MCCARTHY’S TENTATIVE DEAL RAISES DEBT CEILING UNTIL 2025

“What Kevin McCarthy did — what the House Republicans did this time was to pass legislation which became the only legislation which actually raised the debt ceiling from the 31.4 trillion. So it became the basis for negotiations,” Gurdon said. “It’s very clear that Joe Biden, he even sort of conceded it in the remarks he just made, that no one gets everything that they want. And of course the Republicans didn’t get everything they want. But Kevin McCarthy said that they would not right from the start.”

President Joe Biden appeared to go back on his word when he promised the White House was not negotiating with House Republicans on the debt ceiling, though he maintains he merely negotiated on spending cuts. The tentative deal emerged weeks of meetings between negotiators for Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

“[Biden] had to negotiate because he could see himself losing the PR battle on this and there are some elements in this which, you know, the Left will really dislike,” Gurdon said.

Among McCarthy’s “success,” according to Gurdon, was phasing in work requirements for SNAP benefits. The White House had previously said it would not budge on work requirements.

“This can be a template for the way things move when the next time that it comes up,” Gurdon said.
