Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) commemorated the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot by sharing a past op-ed she wrote detailing her experience combined with a call for unity among her colleagues to “restore our public.”

In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, Omar linked to an Atlantic op-ed she wrote in the weeks after the Jan. 6 attack in which she recalled her experience while inside the Capitol building and reflected on her childhood years in Somalia, comparing the two incidents as examples of countries “descend[ing] from relative stability into civil war.” Omar reshared the article, calling on the country to remember the Jan. 6 riot and avoid reelecting former President Donald Trump in November.

“Three years after the January 6th insurrection to overthrow our government, our democracy remains on life support,” Omar said. “To defeat authoritarianism and Trumpism, we need a bold unified movement to restore our republic.”

Omar’s comments come as several other Democrats have sought to use the Jan. 6 anniversary to attack the former president and his allies, using images and videos of the riot to argue against his reelection. President Joe Biden himself posted a video reflecting on the violent protest, seeking to paint Trump as directly responsible.

Other Democratic leaders also weighed in, accusing Trump of inciting “a dangerous mob” after losing the election.

“A dangerous mob, incited by the former president, stormed and desecrated the Citadel of our democracy to hunt down Members of Congress, halt the peaceful transfer of power and overturn the results of a free and fair election,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). “We will never forget the horrific events of January 6, 2021 and we will always honor the brave members of law enforcement who were injured or lost their lives due to the violence incited by the big lie.”

Omar’s comments notably call for a “unified movement” against those on the Right who support Trump’s claims of a stolen election despite the progressive Democrat breaking from Biden and much of the rest of the Democratic Party in recent weeks.

Omar, along with other members of “the Squad,” have publicly accused Biden of fueling warfare in Israel by providing the country with military assistance instead of calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East. Those calls have put Biden in a tough spot as he seeks to unite his party on all fronts ahead of the 2024 election, highlighting the underlying tensions between Democrats who staunchly support Israel and those who are adamant about defending Palestinian rights.
