The Iowa Republican Party announced the date for the 2024 Iowa Republican Caucus, voting unanimously to set the date to Jan. 15, 2024.

Iowa Democrats proposed holding their 2024 caucuses the same day as Iowa Republicans in a draft of their delegate selection plan, despite a plan put forward by President Joe Biden last year and approved by the Democratic National Committee in February that declared Iowa would no longer host the first-in-the-nation caucuses.

“After our state legislature and governor took needed action earlier this year to preempt Iowa Democrats’ plans to derail the Iowa Caucus by running a de facto primary election instead, we are also proud to affirm that Iowa will continue to honor our half-century-old promises to the other carveout states,” Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said in a press release.

The 2024 presidential nominating calendar is still unclear for both Democrats and Republicans as members of each party spar with the DNC and Biden over state selections.

“The Democratic party looks like America, so does this proposal,” said Jaime Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, at the party’s February 2023 conference before the plan was approved.

Since 1976 when former President Jimmy Carter put the Iowa Caucus on the map, the state has been a crucial stop for every presidential candidate early on.

Iowa will be represented by 40 delegates at the Republican National Convention, and those will be divided proportionally to the statewide vote.

“We remain committed to maintaining Iowa’s cherished First-in-the-Nation Caucuses, and look forward to holding a historic caucus in the coming months and defeating Joe Biden come November 2024,” Kaufmann said.

Candidates vying for the White House have made frequent stops in the early-voting state of Iowa, with former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley hosting more than two dozen events in the the Hawkeye State since launching her campaign in February. Former Vice President Mike Pence launched his 2024 presidential bid in Iowa last month.
