CNN’s Jake Tapper set out a blueprint for how to host a town hall with former President Donald Trump on Tuesday while addressing the 45th president’s controversial town hall appearance in May.

“So, first of all, I will say Kaitlan Collins did fact-check him in real time. So, I do want to say that,” Tapper told the Sunny Hostin of ABC’s The View, who called Trump a potentially twice impeached and thrice indicted former president.

“You don’t even think that he should be hosted in a town hall, and I think that is one question, and the other question is, if you do decide to do it, how do you do it?”

Tapper disagreed with Hostin’s claim that Trump, who leading the race for the 2024 Republican nomination, should not be offered a town hall.

“He’s the leading Republican candidate, and I think it is important for voters to get a chance to ask that person questions and to see who this candidate is,” he said.

Hostin tried to justify her argument by calling Trump a liar.

“He does tell a lot of lies,” Tapper said. “That is absolutely true.”

He added that because of that, networks must figure out a way to host a town hall effectively with the 45th president.

“Do you do it live?” he asked. “Because, if you do it taped, you can fact-check more effectively, you can put up chyrons.”

“But you run the risk of him saying that you doctored the tape,” Joy Behar chimed in.

Tapper offered a solution.

“You say we’re gonna air it all, but you add chyrons that correct,” he said.

“Maybe you don’t fill the audience with just people who like him,” Whoopi Goldberg said.

“Well, but that’s a different thing,” Tapper replied. “So, all the town hall meetings are with — if it’s Biden, it’s Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, and if it’s Trump or Nikki Haley or whomever, it’s Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.”
