Police Chief Stephen Mylett said officers immediately sought to offer assistance to Walker. However, Walker died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, which ruled his death a homicide, according to USA Today.

“It was difficult to watch and shocking,” Mylett said of the video. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating at the request of police, and Mylett said he is not “going to pass judgment” until that work is done. Eight officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in the meantime.

Akron police previously said Walker shot a gun during the pursuit from outside the vehicle, but that claim was refuted by Walker’s family, according to the Washington Post. Video appears to show a gun in the front seat of Walker’s vehicle during the chase.

Officials in Akron canceled plans for an Independence Day celebration after the fatal shooting, and Bobby DiCello, an attorney for Walker’s family, said the video would “stir up some passion. It’s going to make people uneasy.” He called the video “brutal.”
