On Tuesday, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) introduced Senate legislation that would ban sex change procedures for minors across the United States.

The bill, titled the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, would prohibit “genital mutilation, chemical castration, and sterilization of innocent children” by charging any physicians knowingly providing “gender-affirming care” with a Class C felony, according to a press release published by the senator’s office.

Any person convicted of a Class C felony could face a prison sentence of 10 to 25 years or a maximum fine of $250,000, per the Daily Caller.

The legislation was originally introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in the House, for which Vance thanked the Georgia representative.

“Under no circumstances should doctors be allowed to perform these gruesome, irreversible operations on underage children,” Vance said in the release.

“With this legislation, we have an opportunity to save countless young Americans from a lifetime of suffering and regret,” he added.

The legislation, if passed in Congress and signed by the president, would also restrict all taxpayer-funded gender procedures, ban institutions of higher education from providing instruction on such treatments, and consider immigrants who have performed “gender-affirming care” on a minor either deportable or ineligible for visas or admission to the U.S. based on their immigration status.
