On June 3, 2020, Dzenan Camovic stabbed two officers before taking one’s service weapon and firing at more, wounding several, according to the indictment. Camovic was reportedly inspired by and possessed propaganda material from several Islamic terrorist groups, including ISIS, according to CNN. He was also said to have repeatedly screamed, “Allahu akbar!” during the attack.

“As today’s sentence demonstrates, those who direct hate-fueled violence at anyone — including the brave men and women of law enforcement — will face stiff consequences in our criminal justice system,” assistant director of the FBI field office in New York, Michael J. Driscoll, said in a statement.

Though not leaving any fatalities, Camovic’s attack left several officers gravely wounded.

“On or about June 3, 2020, Camovic approached two uniformed New York City Police Department officers in the vicinity of 885 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Upon reaching the NYPD officers, Camovic stabbed one of officers in the neck area with a knife. Camovic then chased after the second officer, repeatedly and violently stabbing at the officer with the knife and eventually throwing the knife at the officer,” the indictment read.

“Camovic then ran back toward the first officer, whom he had already stabbed, and again attacked the officer. A struggle ensued. Camovic fought for and ultimately forcibly gained control of the officer’s service weapon, thereby robbing the officer of his service weapon through the use of force,” it added. “After gaining control of the officer’s service weapon, Camovic brandished the weapon and fired multiple shots at several officers, including at one or more officers who responded to the scene. Several officers were wounded during the course of Camovic’s attack.”
