The most-searched person of 2022 was Johnny Depp, followed by Will Smith.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s ex-wife Amber Heard wasn’t far behind, coming in as the third-most-searched, according to Google.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and comedian Chris Rock rounded out the top five most-searched people on Google in 2022.

All of the top five were involved in controversy this year. Depp and Heard spent the spring in a Virginia courtroom battling over dueling defamation claims. The case included accusations of domestic violence and drug use, among other things.

Smith had slapped Rock onstage at the Oscars over a joke made about his wife, prompting worldwide headlines about the incident. Rock has remained relatively tight-lipped about the slap, mentioning it in passing on a few occasions during his comedy tour. Smith, however, has made several public apologies to the comedian, to no avail.

Putin, on the other hand, is continuing to conduct a bloody invasion of Ukraine that began in February. Notably, Ukraine was the No. 1 searched news item for the year.

The country was followed by “Queen Elizabeth passing” and “election results.”

The late queen was the No. 1 search in the “passings” category this year, followed by Betty White, who died at the end of 2021. Anne Heche, Bob Saget, and Aaron Carter were also in the top five most-searched deaths.
