Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito paused an order restricting the Biden administration’s communications with social media companies after lower courts ruled officials engaged in censorship practices.

Alito’s temporary hold on a federal judge’s July 4 ruling comes after the Justice Department asked the high court to stay the decision, arguing it infringes on First Amendment rights of government officials and impedes their official duties.

The preliminary injunction is short lived, as Alito’s order noted it would be stayed until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 22.

Responses to the government’s application are due Sept. 20.

The lawsuit known as Missouri v. Biden was filed last year by former Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, claiming the federal government colluded with social media companies such as Twitter and Meta to suppress the freedom of speech.
