Alpha Kappa Alpha, the historically black sorority Vice President Kamala Harris joined in college, has formed a political action committee to send one of its most prominent members to the White House.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority PAC, or AKA 1908 PAC, will be able to accept donations of up to $5,000 from members of the sorority and their families to support federal campaigns and political parties.

AKA is part of the country’s oldest and most prestigious sororities and fraternities known as the “Divine Nine.” The network of 2 million alumnae could play a critical role in mobilizing black voters ahead of the 2024 election.

After President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, the Divine Nine Council of Presidents “met and agreed to meet this critical moment in history with an unprecedented voter registration, education and mobilization coordinated campaign.”

“This campaign will activate the thousands of chapters and members in our respective organizations to ensure strong voter turnout in the communities we serve,” they said.

Harris invited the Divine Nine to the White House after she took office in 2021, marking the first time the group had met directly with a president or vice president. Harris delivered a speech at AKA’s annual convention in July.

Her first public event after becoming the Democratic presidential nominee was at a gathering for Zeta Phi Beta, another Divine Nine sorority. Phi Beta Sigma, a Divine Nine fraternity, also operates a PAC. In addition, the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee was formed in 2005 to support candidates who “enhance the fraternity and sorority experience.”

AKA’s super PAC comes as both Harris and former President Donald Trump look to gain support from black voters ahead of the November election.
