Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he will support former President Donald Trump as president in 2024 and believes he will be the eventual Republican nominee.
“I will support the president. I will support President Trump,” McCarthy told CBS Sunday Morning in a preview of the interview released Friday.

McCarthy predicted that if there is a rematch of the 2020 presidential election, the former president will emerge as the victor. He also claimed that if Trump were the new president, a red wave would appear and Republicans would pick up more seats in the House and flip the Senate.
He added that he would accept a Cabinet position in the Trump administration if one were offered and felt he was the right choice.
“In the right position. Look, if I’m the best person for the job, yes,” McCarthy said. “I worked with President Trump on a lot of policies. We worked together to win the majority, but we also have a relationship where we’re very honest with one another.”
The endorsement comes after McCarthy refused to publicly endorse a candidate for months and days after he announced he was resigning from Congress at the end of the year. It also comes just two months after the former speaker was removed as leader of the House in October after serving in the position for just nine months.
Regarding the vice presidency, McCarthy recently recommended Trump select former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who is also running for the GOP nomination, given her popularity in the general election. But Haley’s campaign has denied that she is looking to become vice president.

“If I was picking for purely political decisions, what it looks like today is the anti-Trump vote is going to Nikki Haley,” McCarthy said on Wednesday. “But the question is: Who you select, will they serve? So that’s another question you have to have. And it’s about addition.”
McCarthy has not announced any specific future plans but vowed “to serve America in new ways.” He also maintained that he will “continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office.”
