Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) once referred to former President Donald Trump as a “lying motherf***er” during the Ukraine impeachment scandal, according to an excerpt from a new book.

During a meeting with the authors of The Divider: Trump in the White House 2017-2021, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, around the time of Trump’s first impeachment trial, the senator reportedly declared that it would be insane for Democrats to impeach Trump over allegations that he extorted the president of Ukraine in a phone call in July 2019, but was not blind to his misgivings.

“He’s a lying motherf***er,” Graham reportedly said, before noting that Trump would not lose the support of the Republican Party. “He could kill fifty people on our side and it wouldn’t matter.”

The meeting occurred less than 48 hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry into the extortion allegations, according to the Independent. Although he was impeached by the House of Representatives in 2020 for the Ukraine call, Trump was acquitted by the Senate.

The comments follow a rocky relationship between the two Republican leaders. Despite renouncing his relationship with the former president following the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, Graham has voiced support for Trump as the likely 2024 GOP candidate for president.

Graham also warned that there would be “riots in the street” if Trump was prosecuted for his handling of classified documents seized during the FBI raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last month.

The book additionally claimed that Trump was paranoid that there would be an assassination attempt on him in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by U.S. forces. Former first lady Melania Trump told her husband that he was “blowing” the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the book also claimed.

The book will be released this coming Tuesday.
