Los Angeles received its first ever blizzard warning amid an unusual winter storm in the usually warm Southern California.

The National Weather Service published a map of weather alerts, showing large swathes of southern California and the Midwest under blizzard warnings. In total, nearly 2.5 million people are currently under blizzard alerts. A further 35 million are under ice or winter storm warnings.

“Due to the potential for strong winds and heavy snow, a BLIZZARD WARNING was issued for the #LACounty and #VenturaCounty mountains from 4 am Friday to 4 pm Saturday. Snow accumulations up to 5 feet and wind gusts in excess of 55 mph are expected. #CAsnow #CAwx,” NWS Los Angeles tweeted.

The weather service later tweeted that it is the first recorded blizzard warning for the area.

“Blizzard warning for extremely dangerous mountain conditions coming. Mountain travel will be a mess. Clarification note on previous post: After review more records, This is the first blizzard warning that we are aware of (even dating back before 2007),” it wrote.

The storm is set to be the largest winter storm in Southern California since the 1980s, according to ABC7 meteorologist Drew Tuma.
