President Joe Biden stated Saturday morning that he’s “grateful that Lewiston and surrounding communities are now safe” after mass shooting suspect Robert Card was found dead on Friday evening from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“This was a tragic two days for the families in Maine who have been devastated by gun violence,” Biden posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “At least eighteen souls brutally slain and more injured, and scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine.”

“We’re grateful that Lewiston and surrounding communities are now safe. I thank the brave law enforcement officers who worked around the clock to find this suspect,” he added.

Law enforcement and other officials searched Southern Maine for more than two days after shootings at Schemengees Bar and Grill and bowling alley Just-In-Time Recreation killed 18 people and injured 13 on Wednesday evening.

The shooting suspect, 40-year-old Card, was found dead near a recycling center where he previously worked. His body was discovered near where officials, on Wednesday, found a vehicle connected to the suspect along the Androscoggin River in Lisbon.

Biden joined Democratic lawmakers in reviving efforts to push stricter gun control legislation following the mass shooting, urging Republicans to take action in Congress.

“Americans should not have to live like this,” Biden said. “I call on Republicans in Congress to fulfill their obligation to keep Americans safe. And I will continue doing everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. The Lewiston community, and all Americans, deserve nothing less.”

In a White House statement on Thursday, Biden implored Republican lawmakers to “fulfill their duty to protect the American people” by passing legislation banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, bills enacting universal background checks, and ensuring guns are safely stored, along with ending legal immunity for gun manufacturers.
