A majority of registered Democrats say they want President Joe Biden to be their party’s nominee in the 2024 elections, according to a new poll.

More than half (58%) of Democratic voters say they want Biden to be at the top of their 2024 ticket, compared to 42% who said they would prefer someone else, according to the latest Emerson College poll released on Tuesday. The most recent numbers come as Biden has yet to announce whether he plans to run for reelection, with Democrats anxiously waiting to see how the presidential primary field will shape up.

Biden has managed to garner support from several corners of the Democratic Party ahead of his expected announcement, the poll shows. Roughly 72% of Hispanic Democrats say they want the president to be their nominee, as well as 75% of black voters. Meanwhile, 51% of white Democrats say they would prefer someone else.

It’s not clear who voters would prefer as an alternative to Biden. However, should the president announce a bid for a second term, it’s unlikely to attract many candidates to challenge his nomination.

Former President Donald Trump is the only candidate so far to announce a White House bid, but several other Republicans are expected to follow suit — setting the stage for what is likely to be a contentious GOP primary.

Trump holds a commanding lead over his possible GOP challengers, with 55% of Republicans saying they would vote for the former president, the poll shows. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) came in second with 29% support, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence at 6% and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley with 3%.

The Emerson College poll also surveyed voters on who’d they vote for in a hypothetical rematch between Biden and Trump, with the president trailing his predecessor by 3 percentage points, according to the poll.
