A Florida man spent 30 hours in jail and is facing a felony charge after he murdered his neighbor’s rooster in what he called an act of self-defense.

James Nix, 54, is going viral in the wake of his arrest after detailing how he killed his neighbor’s rooster in May, according to a report.

“I’m defending myself, you know,” Nix, a Jacksonville native, said. “I was fearing for my safety, and the chicken died.”

“I didn’t know to give it a 21-gun salute!” he continued. “CPR, mouth-to-mouth, do you know? Or call the chicken ambulance?”

Nix was grabbing his mail when the rooster belonging to Jason Defelice came after him, he claimed.

“I just checked my mail … and I hear, ‘Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!’ And I turn around, and there’s a chicken out there in the street,” Nix said. “I said, ‘Oh boy, here we go.'”

“Turn around, walk to my place — bang bang bang bang bang. Now, the chicken is in my yard! Now, its neck flares up.”

The rooster continued its actions, and Nix said he tried to defend himself.

“So I pick up a stick in the yard, and I try to hit it. But the chicken is jumping up at me, and I accidentally knocked [it] in the head, you know? Call it a lucky shot, whatever.”

Defelice came home to find the body of his rooster and said he believes Nix killed his pet on purpose.

“I lose [roosters] to animals, but I was not expecting to lose them to my neighbor that was like my friend,” he said.

“I didn’t see my rooster at first, so I knew something was up because he would always come chase me,” Defelice said. “Then, I went in his yard and yelled at him, and he finally came out and said he killed him.”

Defelice and Nix had a confrontation.

“He’s yelling and screaming in my yard, and I just told him to leave,” Nix said.

Defelice contacted animal control, and Nix was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, the report noted.

“Next thing you know, he calls the chicken police on me,” Nix said.
