Margot Robbie divulged that Disney scrapped plans for a female-led Pirates of the Caribbean installment in a new interview.

The movie would have featured Robbie in a starring role. Notably, the concept for the film was mentioned in Johnny Depp’s high-profile defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard earlier this year.

The unmade film was included in the trial to show that Depp was being pushed out of the Pirates franchise and that Disney was attempting to keep it alive without the embattled actor.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie told Vanity Fair.

In the summer, insiders predicted that a Pirates movie would still be made with Robbie, even after the defamation suit.

The trial saw Depp fans rally around the actor, while Heard had very few in her corner. Depp’s career, which he alleged in the trial was severely affected, has seemed to bounce back.

Some even speculated that he may return to the Pirates franchise. However, news of a return hasn’t come to light yet.

After the trial concluded, the jury found Heard liable for defaming her ex-husband, and she was ordered to pay $10.35 million. She has since appealed the ruling. Depp was found partially liable, also being ordered to pay $2 million. He has similarly appealed.

While Depp isn’t in a future Pirates film, he is certainly keeping himself busy. He has already participated in films, made music, and even created and sold art following the verdict.
