Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced that she filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland a day after the Justice Department’s top official announced he personally approved the FBI raid on the Florida home of former President Donald Trump.
The Republican firebrand, who is a close ally of Trump, said Garland is “endangering, undermining and compromising the justice system” hours after a judge unsealed search warrant documents that show the former president is being investigated for a potential Espionage Act violation and possible obstruction of justice.

“What they’ve been doing to [former] President Trump is political persecution,” Greene said in a video she tweeted. “Merrick Garland has abused his position of power as the attorney general to politically persecute [President] Joe Biden’s enemies. And the whole purpose of this is to prevent [former] President Trump from ever being able to hold office. I’m introducing articles of impeachment on Merrick Garland because we cannot tolerate this in America, where our great institutions are wielded and abused in such a way to impeach people’s political enemies.”
With Republicans being the minority party, those articles of impeachment have not gone anywhere. However, that could soon change if the GOP wins control of the House in November.
Two articles of impeachment are included in the image of the resolution shared by Greene. One claims Garland politicized the Justice Department, and the other claims the attorney general has failed to uphold his oath of office and lost the trust of U.S. citizens to “execute the laws of the United States without partisan bias.”
Trump claimed the documents were declassified, and in a statement from his office on Friday claimed there was a “standing order” by which he declassified documents that left the Oval Office — a claim which is doubted by legal experts.
Greene’s articles of impeachment were met with praise by other members of the Republican party, including Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), who tweeted his support Friday night. Reps. Mary Miller (R-IL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), and Andy Harris (R-MD) co-sponsored the impeachment articles, Greene said.
Greene’s impeachment articles claimed Garland’s effort to unseal the search warrant, which was not opposed by Trump in court, “constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”

Greene filed articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden last year, consisting of three resolutions. One resolution was of “dereliction of duty” for Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan situation, another for the “border crisis,” and a third for “usurping congressional authority and ignoring judicial authority of the Supreme Court” for the Biden administration’s eviction moratorium during the coronavirus pandemic. Greene also filed articles of impeachment against Biden in January of 2021, claiming the president engaged in impeachable offenses related to his work as vice president from 2008 to 2016 and the foreign business dealings of his son Hunter Biden.
