Artificial intelligence models can now replicate independently new AI systems without any human intervention, according to scientists of the project.

A scientific collaboration between Aizip Inc., the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and several University of California campuses has made a breakthrough in using larger AI models that can create smaller AI models.

Yubei Chan, one of the project’s researchers, said the smaller AI models can identify human voices, monitor pipelines, and track wild animals in compact spaces.

“This month, we just demonstrated the first proof of concept such that one type of model can be automatically designed all the way from data generation to the model deployment and testing without human intervention,” Chen reportedly said.

Chen added, “If we think about ChatGPT and tiny machine learning, they are on the two extremes of the spectrum of intelligence. The large models … reside in the cloud. On the other hand, we are building the smallest models. They reside in things.”

Social media reaction to the news of self-replicating AI was mostly negative.

“Did anyone ever see Terminator 2?” one person said on the social media platform X.

Another person said, “Just wait until they realize we’re the problem.”

“Skynet has become self aware,” another person said.
