Soccer star Megan Rapinoe announced on Saturday she will be retiring at the end of this upcoming season.

Rapinoe, 38, will play her fourth World Cup Tournament with the National Women’s Soccer League this summer.

“It is with a deep sense of peace and gratitude that I have decided this will be my final season playing this beautiful game,” Rapinoe writes in a captioned photo of herself as a young girl in an Instagram post to her over 2.1 million followers. “I never could have imagined the ways in which soccer would shape and change my life forever, but by the look on this little girl’s face, I think she knew all along.”

OL Reign FC, based in Seattle, Washington, has retained Rapinoe as the team’s forward since 2013. Rapinoe has won two World Cups in addition to an Olympic gold medal.

The forward was caught kneeling while wearing the USWNT uniform during an exhibition match against Thailand. US Soccer released a statement in the aftermath disapproving of the act. Rapinoe was still was one of the 23 women named to the USWNT roster. This World Cup will also feature Alex Morgan and Kelley O’Hara, coming as the duo’s fourth time on the national team.

Rapinoe’s team is currently 7-3-5 for the 2023 season, with its soon-to-be-retiring forward having scored one goal so far.

This year’s world cup will be hosted in Australia and New Zealand later this summer, with the first match for the team coming July 21 against Vietnam.
