Michigan police found the body of a suspect dead from an apparent suicide on Monday after she was suspected of committing a double homicide.

Ruby Taverner’s body was discovered in Independence Township, Michigan, close to her apartment, where police found the bodies of her brother and boyfriend early Sunday. Taverner apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

“It’s a terrible situation. It always seems to be magnified when you get someone who commits something horrible like that — a homicide — and then kills themselves,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “You almost wonder what was the point to this whole thing? You never get any answers that satisfy those questions because, now, all parties are deceased.”

The sheriff’s office responded to a call from Taverner’s apartment complex in Clarkston, Michigan, early Sunday morning, where the sound of gunshots was heard. The bodies of two victims, who are believed to have been shot by Taverner, were found in one of the apartments.

The body of Bishop Taverner, Ruby Taverner’s brother, was found in the living room, while the body of Ray Muscat, her boyfriend, was found in a rear bedroom. Muscat and Ruby Taverner had lived together, but the police do not know how long they had been in a relationship.

Police believe Ruby Taverner left the apartment on foot because both her cellphone and vehicle were found at the scene. She had three weapons registered to her, with one of them purchased within the past week.

It is unclear what the motive for the shootings was at this time.
