Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) compared the deaths of Tyre Nichols and Ashli Babbitt in a House Oversight Committee hearing Tuesday, saying the civil rights of people who entered the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot “are being violated heavily.”

Greene called Nichols’s death “tragic and extremely difficult to watch.” She then said Babbitt’s death on Jan. 6, 2021, has been largely ignored by Congress.

Greene made the comparison while discussing Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-TX) proposal to add a civil rights and civil liberties subcommittee for the 118th Congress. Crockett’s proposal was voted down.

“There’s a woman in this room whose daughter was murdered on January 6, Ashli Babbitt, and — there’s never been a trial,” Greene said. “As a matter of fact, no one has cared about the person that shot and killed her. And no one in this Congress has really addressed that issue; January 6th committee didn’t address it. And I believe that there are many people who came into the Capitol on Jan. 6 whose civil rights and liberties are being violated heavily.”

The Oversight Committee held its organizational meeting Tuesday, with Greene making her first appearance on the committee since she was appointed earlier this month.

In the previous Congress, Greene had her committee assignments stripped by the Democratic majority.
