Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) voiced openness to raising the retirement age for Social Security as many conservatives have pushed against entitlement reform.
Warning that Social Security appears to be careening toward insolvency, Mace said that 2024 Republican contender Nikki Haley’s call to change the retirement age for individuals in their 20s should be considered.

“I think that’s something that has to be on the table we have to look at,” Mace told CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. “We do have to look at Social Security. We’ve got to look at our spending in this country — mandatory and discretionary if we’re going to take on fixing Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, you name it. We’ve got to get serious about it.”

Entitlement reform has splintered the GOP, with some such as former President Donald Trump, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel urging the party not to make any cuts to the programs.
Haley stressed that the United States could “change the retirement age so that it matches life expectancy” for those in their 20s. Mace underscored that as long as the reforms did not apply to individuals on the cusp of retirement, they should be considered.
“As long as it’s not anybody that’s heading into retirement right now. We do not want to take away [from] those that are in retirement or those that are heading into retirement,” Mace stressed. “We’re talking about younger generations, my kids, for example. If they know what retirement will look like 40 years from now, 50 years from now, then that should be on the table.”

“Both Republicans and Democrats have screwed this thing up, and they’ve got to fix it,” she added.
President Joe Biden has latched onto entitlement reform and slammed Republicans for musing about cutting funding for Social Security and Medicare, which are critical to seniors. Last week he unveiled a budget proposal to shore up funding for Medicare.
