One unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant who evaluated Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa following a hard hit Sunday has been fired.
A source within the NFL revealed the news to ESPN Saturday. Tagovailoa, who was hit in the back of his head during the game against the Buffalo Bills, was cleared to continue playing by the consultant. When the quarterback was tackled while playing against the Cincinnati Bengals, his fingers locked up, which a medical expert on the Prime Video broadcast said was consistent with a “neurological response to head trauma.”
The source claimed that the consultant made “several mistakes” in evaluating Tagovailoa. At the time, NFL chief medical officer Allen Sills said that Tagovailoa not only underwent an evaluation during the Sunday game, but every day leading up to the game on Thursday.

The Dolphins said Tagovailoa was “taken to a local hospital for further evaluation,” where he was ultimately diagnosed with a concussion.
Sills appeared on a television segment to confirm that the incident was under “active review” Saturday.

Tagovailoa tweeted out his gratitude for the support he received Friday. The former offensive MVP reported he was “feeling much better” and is “focused on recovering.”
