Criminal acts were occurring all across the country leading up to and into the New Year after a year of several major crime stories.
In New York City, Chicago, Oklahoma City, and Mobile, criminals celebrated the new year with a stabbing and three shootings.

The stabbing happened just outside Times Square in New York City around 10 p.m. EST Saturday, leaving three NYPD officers hospitalized with injuries. The 19-year-old attacker wielded a machete and struck the group of police, leading to one officer shooting him in the shoulder, leaving the stabber hospitalized as well.
Chicago, Illinois, saw a shooting at a hookah lounge in the Ukrainian Village part of town early Sunday. The suspect fired at victims who exchanged fire, according to police. Two people were hospitalized, with one of them dying at the hospital, and the suspect is at-large, per ABC 7 in Chicago.
A shooting in a parking lot in Oklahoma City shortly after midnight Sunday left one dead and three people injured, per television station KWTV in Oklahoma City. Police are still searching for a suspect, according to the outlet.

Just before 12 a.m. CST in Mobile, Alabama, a shooting left one dead and nine injured blocks away from the city’s MoonPie Over Mobile New Year’s celebration. All nine injured individuals were sent to the hospital and police have no details on the suspect, per AL.com.
The variety of crimes committed just before and after the ringing in of the new year comes as major cities across the country, including Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., saw continued high murder rates in 2022.
