California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has tested positive for COVID-19, his office said late Wednesday night, adding that he is experiencing mild symptoms.
Newsom’s office said he will isolate for the next five days and that his statewide tour is still on for next week, per Ashley Zavala of KRCA news. Newsom has been vaccinated against the virus.
NEWSOM PLANNING POLICY TOUR INSTEAD OF STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS
The positive test comes just days after the Democratic governor returned from a personal trip to Baja California, Mexico.
Newsom will travel from March 16-19 across Northern and Southern California with leaders of the state legislature on a policy tour instead of a traditional State of the State address. It was not made immediately available what policies he and the state legislature would discuss.
The Golden State’s constitution requires that the governor “shall report to the Legislature each calendar year on the condition of the State and may make recommendations.” In the beginning, as was the case with the State of the Union, the governor would give the legislature a letter outlining the “state of the state,” but since Gov. Earl Warren in the 1940s, subsequent governors have given speeches.
The 55-year-old governor ended California’s COVID-19 state of emergency on Feb. 28, nearly three years after it was first declared. With the announcement earlier in February that schoolchildren in the Golden State will not be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine to attend in-person schools, nearly all pandemic protocols were eliminated in the state.
