The NFL reported an 18% increase in concussions during the regular season.
The increase brings the total number of concussions to 149 suffered over 271 games, ESPN reported.
The latest total is an 18% jump from 126 in 2021, and it’s a 14% jump from the three-year average of 130 between 2018 and 2020.

The NFL’s chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, partially attributed the rise to a protocol change that “broadened and strengthened” the definition of a concussion.
“We continue to become more cautious and conservative in our evaluation and diagnosis of concussions,” he said. “That’s not just an opinion. That’s backed up by the data.”

He also revealed that NFL medical staff performed an average of 1.6 concussion evaluations per game — another jump from earlier seasons.
