Fleury brought the mask out while warming up on the Native American Heritage Night hosted by his team. His mask was painted for the occasion, and it was meant to honor his wife, who is native.

This rule from the NHL came after several players complained they were pressured to participate in Pride Night by altering their uniforms with rainbows. As a result, the league banned any alterations to uniforms no matter the theme night.

Arizona Coyotes player Travis Dermott defied the ban last month by placing rainbow tape on his hockey stick. Dermott had playing time during the game, unlike Fleury who did not enter the ice during the game. The NHL said it would review his violation, but a punishment of any kind has yet to be issued.

Fleury did not wear the mask on the sidelines either.
