Republican 2024 presidential hopeful Nikki Haley railed against sanctuary cities during her latest presidential campaign stop this weekend.

Haley made a new campaign promise while at the Iowa State Fair Saturday, where she competed for attention against fellow candidates, including former President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). She also appeared at a sit-down with Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA), who has notably not endorsed any candidate, and has given them all ample time to address the crowd.

“We will come and we will finally deal with the border,” Haley said. “First of all, we will make sure we defund sanctuary cities once and for all.”

The candidate is a former United Nations ambassador and the former governor of South Carolina, where there aren’t any sanctuary cities. Neighboring states, however, such as North Carolina and Georgia, have a number of sanctuary counties by contrast.

“We’ll go back to the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy because, guess what, no one wants to remain in Mexico,” Haley said. “And then instead of ‘catch-and-release,’ we’ll go to catch-and-deport. That’s how you go and make sure you stop the border.”

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) put sanctuary cities to the test by transporting migrants that entered their states to other Democratic-run cities. Abbott alone has sent over 10,600 migrants to Washington, D.C. since April 2022, 10,900 migrants to New York City since August 2022, 4,600 migrants to Chicago since August 2022, 2,100 migrants to Philadelphia since November 2022, 440 migrants to Denver since May 18, and more than 240 migrants to Los Angeles since June 14.

Haley’s campaign efforts have resulted in her qualification for the first Republican primary debate, slated for Aug. 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
