Nonbinary actor Bella Ramsey, 19, revealed that “90%” of the time on the set of The Last of Us, Ramsey was sporting a chest binder, a tool commonly used by biological women who identify as transgender men to flatten their breasts.

The Last of Us is an HBO series wherein “a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope” after a pandemic destroys civilization.

In a new interview, it was revealed that Ramsey had worn a binder frequently on set and for long periods of time. Ramsey conceded that it “probably isn’t healthy. Like please, bind safely.”

Ramsey stars opposite Pedro Pascal, who Ramsey says was “super supportive.“ Pascal’s sibling is reportedly a biological man who identifies as a transgender woman, giving him a rare vantage point from which to provide support.

The two even had conversations about gender and sexuality, Ramsey explained. “And they weren’t always deep: They could be funny and humorous, the whole spectrum,” Ramsey said. “We were just very honest and open with each other.”

In an interview last month, Ramsey said, “I guess my gender has always been very fluid.”

“I’m very much just a person,” Ramsey continued. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”

A study last year indicated that the number of transgender-identifying teenagers has doubled since 2017. This occurred as the number of transgender adults remained relatively unchanged. The study estimated there are roughly 300,000 transgender-identifying teenagers, compared to the 2017 estimate of 150,000.

The study revealed that while 0.5% of adults are transgender, the number is larger for teenagers. About 1.4% of youth in the United States are estimated to identify as transgender, per the study by the Williams Institute at UCLA Law.
