Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) told CBS News’s chief Washington correspondent, Major Garrett, that while he “would love” to see former President Donald Trump take office once again, he thinks America may want a fresh start in someone such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
In a new episode of The Takeout podcast, Cramer said he thinks the country “would like a fresh start and maybe a Mike Pompeo. He’s got the Trump doctrine down. He’s believable on it. He understands it. He supports it himself.”
“I would love to have four more years with Donald Trump, quite honestly,” he said. “I’m pretty close to him. I would love to have him start knowing what he knows now — start taking down the bureaucracy on day one rather than sort of trusting it.”

Garrett added that Pompeo may benefit from not being named Donald Trump. Cramer agreed that there are several viable candidates for 2024 despite only mentioning Pompeo.
Pompeo was elected to the House in 2010 and Cramer in 2012. The two worked alongside each other in Congress through 2019.
Garrett and the senator also discussed this past weekend’s fatal shooting in Buffalo, New York, in which the shooter reportedly targeted black people, killing 10 and wounding three others. Cramer called the event “an awful, evil tragedy.”

“I wept a little bit when I heard about it because the circumstances were just so awful,” he said. “The shooter, his past [comments], his white nationalism, racism … adds to the evil and just illustrates a deep, deep evil in this individual.”
