Former President Barack Obama criticized Republicans during a speech Friday for planning on “investigating their political opponents” if they win control of Congress in November.

The former president also claimed that the Republicans would not help Georgians but focus on themselves instead and cut out programs such as Social Security and Medicare and give tax breaks to large corporations.

“[Republicans] spend the next two years investigating their political opponents, how’s that gonna help you pay the bills?” Obama asked.

Obama’s statements follow years of investigations into former President Donald Trump following multiple controversies, including allegations that he colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

The former president also defended President Joe Biden during the rally, claiming he was “fighting” for the people of Georgia while he’s in the White House.

“The only way to make this economy fair is if we nurture it and fight for it, and that starts with electing people to see you and care about you, people who will struggle alongside you and fight for you,” Obama said. “That’s what you did two years ago when you sent Joe Biden to the White House. Joe is fighting for you every day. He’s doing everything he can to put more money in your pockets, to make your streets safer, and bring more good paying jobs here to Georgia.”
Obama and Biden are scheduled to appear at a rally in Pennsylvania together to stump for Senate hopeful John Fetterman. Obama was stumping for Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and the Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams on Friday.

The former president also attacked Warnock’s opponent, former football star Herschel Walker, claiming he was a “celebrity who wants to be a politician.”

Leading a thought experiment, Obama claimed that people would not want Walker performing surgery or flying a plane with no experience and asked why he should be a senator when he is a former professional football player who has no experience in politics.

“My point is not that being a football player disqualifies you from being a senator,” Obama said. “But in the case of Rev. Warnock’s opponent, there’s very little evidence that he has taken any interest [or] bothered to learn anything about or displayed any kind of inclination towards public service or volunteer work or helping people in any way. Seems to me he’s a celebrity who wants to be a politician, and we’ve seen how that goes.”

Warnock, who is running for a full term in the United States Senate, said he was not giving up on the United States even as it faces a partisan divide and reflected on the Georgia his mother grew up in in the 1950s.

“I’m not about to give up on the country, and I’m not about to give in to the demagogues who are trying to sow the seeds of division because they have no defeat,” Warnock said. “They have no vision. I’m going to stand up for the best in the American spirit.”
