Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, a Republican, entered the Senate GOP primary race on Monday morning. He will face off against fellow Republicans Matt Dolan and Bernie Moreno, who is endorsed by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), for the chance to take on Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in the 2024 general election.
“It’s official: I’m running,” he tweeted, along with a video message.

His campaign also filed his statement of candidacy early Monday morning with the Federal Election Commission.
“Rising prices are hurting families. An open border is bringing in drugs and crime. Parents are being cut out of their children’s education,” he said in the video.
“I’m a Green Beret, a conservative, a man of faith, and I’m not afraid of a fight,” he said. “I was born and raised in Akron and a proud Ohio State graduate.”

In the second quarter of 2023, Brown pulled in $5 million to protect his seat. He also reported having $8.7 million cash on hand. Moreno, who is relatively unknown, brought in $2.2 million. The race is rated as a toss-up by the Cook Political Report and is a top target for Senate Republicans.
In a recent East Carolina University poll, Brown defeats each GOP contender by slim margins. Brown bests Dolan by only 1 percentage point, 45% to 44%, and Moreno by 4 points, 46% to 42%. LaRose loses by just 2 percentage points to Brown in a matchup, 44% to 42%.
