Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said on Wednesday that the Republican Party has better odds of winning the presidency in 2024 if it nominates someone other than former President Donald Trump.
In an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he expressed confidence in the GOP’s ability to beat President Joe Biden in 2024, but more so if the party moves on from Trump, who he said has too much “baggage.”

“It’s a disaster if we nominate Trump,” he said.
“I think we’re much more likely to lose — we haven’t won anything with him since he first won in ’16,” Ryan explained. “We lost the House in ‘18, the presidency in ‘20, the Senate in ’20, and we could have won the Senate in 2022 but for him.
“I think we lose with him,” he reiterated.
The former congressman noted that there is a chance of Trump winning against Biden, but explained that other Republican candidates have better odds.
