The backlash over an anti-LGBT ad circulated by Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) presidential campaign has reached a new level. The team behind Peaky Blinders came out to denounce the ad after the video used a clip of their show.

On Friday, the DeSantis War Room Twitter account shared a video contrasting some of former President Donald Trump’s previous statements regarding the LGBT community with those of DeSantis. The ad, which sought to tout DeSantis’s anti-LGBT credentials, featured clips of DeSantis interspersed with condemnations of him by liberal figures and clips of several fictional characters.

In two instances, Thomas Shelby, the criminal protagonist of the hit show, was featured. His appearance drew the attention of the production team and partners behind the show.

“On behalf of the partners of peaky blinders – Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions and Banijay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron Desantis campaign was obtained without permission or official licence,” a statement posted on the show’s Twitter account read.

“We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner,” it continued.

The statement did not include any threats of legal action against DeSantis’s campaign.
