Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) provided an update on her husband’s condition after he was violently attacked in October, noting he is recovering well but that it will “take a little while for him to be back to normal.”
Pelosi, who announced she would step down as the Democratic Party’s leader in the House last month, told CNN her husband has been “very strong” but that the incident has been “sad for our family.” Her comments come just three months after Paul Pelosi was violently attacked inside the couple’s San Francisco home on Oct. 28.

“I feel very sad about it because of what happened, but also more sad because the person was searching for me,” Nancy Pelosi told CNN’s Chris Wallace in an interview set to air on Sunday. “My dear husband, who is not even that political actually, paid the price.”
Paul Pelosi has rarely been seen since the attack, making his first public appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., in December. Most recently, he attended a meeting to celebrate the Golden State Warriors, who won the 2022 NBA championship, at the White House on Tuesday.
“He’s been out a bit because the doctor said he has to have something to look forward to, and so again, one day at a time,” Nancy Pelosi said.
Paul Pelosi suffered several injuries after a man allegedly broke into their home to look for the then-House speaker, according to a federal criminal complaint. During the incident, the suspect struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer, causing a skull fracture and serious injuries to his arm and hands, according to a spokesperson for the speaker.
Nancy Pelosi gave an update on his condition, telling the outlet that the wounds on his body have mostly healed but that his skull injury “is a different thing.”
“Anyone who’s had a head injury knows that you have to be very careful,” she said. “You have to be careful about movement. You have to be careful about light. You have to be careful about sound. And it just takes a while. You get very tired, but, you know, without going so further into it, but it takes, it will take probably another three or four months, according to the doctors, for him to be really himself.”

David DePape, who is accused of attacking Paul Pelosi, pleaded not guilty to all state charges levied against him during a court appearance on Dec. 28 and waived his right to a speedy trial completed within 60 days. The 42-year-old is scheduled to reappear in court in February to set a trial date.
The charges DePape faces include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official. If convicted, he could face 13 years to life with the charges.
