Police in Michigan are investigating a post-game brawl between players on the football teams for the University of Michigan and Michigan State University on Saturday.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said two of his players were “assaulted” by Michigan State players as they went into the tunnel to the locker room. Michigan Stadium, also known as “The Big House,” only has one tunnel for both teams to access their locker rooms.

“Just like anybody, you want to protect your players. Ten on one, whatever it was, it was just bad. It needs to be investigated and brought to a conclusion. Our athletic director will make sure that that takes place,” Harbaugh said.

Video footage of the brawl appears to show two Michigan players outnumbered by the Michigan State players and fights breaking out before the rest of the Michigan team got through the tunnel.

Police for both universities said in a joint statement Sunday they are working to investigate the incident.

“The University of Michigan Police, in partnership with Michigan State University Police, Michigan Athletics and Michigan football, is actively reviewing footage and investigating the postgame incident. Situations like these, and the safety of the community, are taken very seriously,” the statement said.

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker said there “is no excuse for behavior that puts our team or our opponents at risk” and stressed his program would “take swift and appropriate action.”

The Big Ten conference also said in a statement that it is “aware” of the incident and that it will “review the facts” and “take appropriate action.”
