Local police warned residents that a new feature available on the latest iPhone update could intrude on people’s privacy, as the feature could potentially share contact information with strangers.
This feature, titled “NameDrop,” allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to quickly share information with each other and is available to anyone who has downloaded the iOS 17.1 update. However, police departments across the country warned that this feature can lead to users sharing contact information with other people unintentionally.

NameDrop is automatically turned on for users who have downloaded this update. For anyone who wants to turn this feature off, they can go to the iPhone or Apple Watch’s settings, click “General,” then “AirDrop,” and finally switch “Bringing Devices Together” off.
“Don’t forget to change these settings after the update on your children’s phones as well,” a statement from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

Apple has not made a statement about this feature or the privacy concerns that it poses. Most recently, Apple is one of several companies that suspended their ad campaigns on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Washington Examiner contacted Apple for comment.
