A break in a Mexican prison less than 15 miles from the U.S. border on New Year’s Day has left 14 people dead, including 10 prison custodians.

The incident occurred at El Centro Estatal de Reinsercion Social (Cereso) in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and allowed 24 prisoners to escape the facility, per a report from El Diario.

The outlet cites a military report which says six trucks armed with personnel arrived at the facility where someone was waiting for them. The group opened fire on the prison and took two dozen prisoners away.

Authorities say they have secured control of the prison and are actively checking all areas of the facility.

The prison break took place close to the U.S.-Mexico border near El Paso, Texas, which has faced difficulties housing the mass influx of immigrants crossing the southern border.
