Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Bryan Kohberger, who is accused of murdering four University of Idaho students last November.
Kohberger, 28, a criminology graduate student from Washington State University, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary in the Nov. 13 deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors revealed in a court filing on Monday that they will be pursuing the death penalty against Kohberger.
“The State gives this notice based on the fact that it has not identified or been provided with any mitigating circumstances sufficient to prohibit the triers of fact from considering all penalties authorized by the Idaho legislature including the possibility of a capital sentence,” the filing read.

“Consequently, considering all evidence currently known to the State, the State is compelled to file this notice of intent to seek the death penalty,” it added. “The State will continue to review additional information as it is received, and reserves its statutory right to amend or withdraw this notice.”
Kohberger was arrested in late December following a monthslong investigation by state and federal law enforcement agencies that used his white Hyundai Elantra vehicle and evidence found in his car and home to connect him to the murders.
