Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) performed the Heimlich maneuver on Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) after she began choking on food during a GOP conference luncheon on Thursday, two senators in the meeting told the Washington Examiner.
Ernst was hosting the luncheon for her colleagues, and ribeye and pork chops were being served.

“It was great that Rand was there,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) told the Washington Examiner.

Paul previously worked as an ophthalmologist before being elected to the Senate in 2010. He performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky” in his free time, according to his Senate website.
A spokesperson for Ernst did not respond to a request for comment on the incident, but the senator’s X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, account made a post regarding the incident, sarcastically attributing it to woke policies being forced by Democrats.
