Actress Reese Witherspoon and country singer Kacey Musgraves have joined together to create a new country music competition television show My Kind of Country in hopes of making country music “more inclusive and representative.”

My Kind of Country was born out of conversations with Kacey Musgraces about how country music needs to be more inclusive & representative,” Witherspoon tweeted Friday about her new show streaming on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ describes the show as a “fresh take on a competition series, breaking down barriers in country music by providing an extraordinary opportunity to diverse and innovative artists from around the world.”

In the first episode of the series, Witherspoon and Musgraves described how they were “on a mission to shake things up.”

“You and I got together a long time ago and started talking about how country music should stop limiting people and should start opening doors. Then I really got thinking, this could be a show,” Witherspoon said to Musgraves while the two sat on a couch.

Musgraves complained that “country radio tends to underestimate their listeners.”

“Country music isn’t just about songs about trucks… I think taking creative risk on people who has something different to say, sound different or look different that is how we are going to find the icons of our next generation,” Musgraves said.

In the show’s trailer, Witherspoon says the show found three “scouts to search the world for country musicians who don’t necessarily fit the mold.”

She described how she recruited a trio of talent scouts — Jimmie Allen, Orville Peck, and Mickey Guyton — who are passionate about “inclusivity.”

Guyton is a 39-year-old country music singer and was nominated for New Female Vocalist of the Year at the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards in 2016.

Peck is a South African and openly LGBT country singer, best known for blending country music with punk and rock. His signature look includes performing with a bandana covering most of his face.

Allen is a 37-year-old multi-platinum country music singer, known for his hit “Best Shot” and regularly tours with other country music stars including Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. He has collaborated with Elton John and Pitbull.

The scouts will recruit artists to hold showcases and workshops. Throughout the music competition, the scouts will judge the best artists to win a “life-changing opportunity” from Apple TV+.

The series takes place in Nashville, Tennessee.
