A restaurant in Tiverton, Rhode Island, has apologized for a meme it posted on its Facebook page Friday that likened the suffering of Anne Frank and other victims of the Holocaust to the heat wave much of the country has experienced in the past week.

The Atlantic Bar and Grille posted a meme that showed a black-and-white image of Frank with the caption “It’s hotter than an oven out there … and I should know!” with a “#ohboy” hashtag.

COLD CASE INVESTIGATORS NAME SUSPECT IN SEARCH FOR WHO BETRAYED ANNE FRANK TO NAZIS

The employee who posted the meme did not recognize it was Frank in the meme and removed the post when they realized who it was, according to an ABC affiliate in Providence.

Frank was a Jewish girl living in the Netherlands when the Nazis occupied the country during World War II and subsequently began sending Jewish people to concentration camps. Frank hid with her family in a warehouse annex for over two years before being caught and sent away to a concentration camp, where she would die. Her diary was published by her father after the war, telling of her time as a Jewish girl hiding during the Nazi occupation.

The restaurant posted an apology on its Facebook page Monday, according to the Newport Daily News.

“The post was poorly thought out and we realize that it was incredibly inappropriate and does not reflect our values as members of our community. There is no excuse for the sharing of this post, and there is nothing we can do to rectify it, all we can do now is offer our deepest apology to those who were rightfully hurt by our actions,” the statement said.
