Colleagues and friends of the late former first lady Rosalynn Carter flocked to social media Sunday to share their condolences.

Carter died at the age of 96, after 77 years of marriage to her husband former President Jimmy Carter, 99. Her death followed the introduction of hospice care in her home earlier this week.

“Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has just passed,” first lady Jill Biden announced at a “Friendsgiving” meal with service members in Virginia. “She was well-known for her efforts on mental health and caregiving and women’s rights.


“Rosalynn Carter leaves behind a meaningful legacy not only as First Lady but as a wife and mother,” Fellow first lady Melania Trump wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We will always remember her servant’s heart and devotion to her husband, family, and country. May she rest in peace.”


“Rosalynn Carter’s contributions to Georgia, the nation, and to humanity are unparalleled. She has lived an exceptional life of service, whether as the nation’s First Lady, at home in Plains, or fighting Guinea worm in Africa,” Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) wrote. “Her years of activism around Habitat for Humanity, her efforts to raise awareness about mental health, and her unwavering advocacy for women and children cements her legacy as one of our most consequential, accomplished, and historic first ladies of all time. Our prayers are with the former president and the Carter family during this difficult time.”

Jon Ossoff (D-GA) wrote. “Among her many accomplishments, Rosalynn Carter will be remembered for her compassionate nature and her passion for women’s rights, human rights, and mental health reform. The State of Georgia and the United States are better places because of Rosalynn Carter. I join all Georgians and Americans in mourning her loss. May Rosalynn Carter’s memory be a blessing.”

Cory Booker (D-NJ) captioned a photo of himself with the presidential couple. “As First Lady she served our country with grace and kindness. My heart is with her love of over 75 years, President Carter and their family today.”


“Rosalynn Carter was a great partner to a consequential President and helped to define the modern role of First Lady,” former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder captioned his photo with the Carters. “She was gracious, warm – and determined.”

“In remembrance of First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who brought compassion and advocacy to the forefront,” comedian Wanda Sykes wrote. “A true inspiration and a woman of substance. Sending love to President Carter and their family. May she rest in peace.”

Carter is survived by her husband, four children Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
